Organizations acknowledge the urgency and necessity of incorporating electronic records into their existing records management programs. Most organizations, however, do not have comprehensive and prioritized plans in place to do so. Instead, they address electronic records management in a reactive mode on a "one-up" basis due to actual problems that arise, or to perceived risks and threats.
What is often missing is a sound understanding of the basic framework of an organization's computing environment. Since there are many different categories or "groupings" of electronic records (usually based on the type of application or system that was used to create them), an understanding of the similarities and differences among these groupings is essential to defining electronic records management solutions.
The objective of this session is to identify electronic records categories and then, for each of these categories, discuss the key considerations that help define workable solutions. Specifically, this session will assist participants in:
- Defining the categories of electronic records created and maintained
- Profiling the overall computing environment of the organization
- Learning the key considerations and assessment criteria for each category of electronic records within the organization
- Identifying possible strategies and tactics for managing electronic records
