Organizations acquire new companies, merge, divest, and form joint ventures every day.

Combining cultures, assets, processes, and overall information governance – from the legacy organizations into one – presents very unique issues, challenges, and opportunities.

Putting a governance structure in place at the formation stage of the new entity requires:

  • Communication across the organization,
  • Planning across business functions, and
  • Thinking outside the usual corporate processes.

When Miller Brewing Company and Coors Brewing Company formed a joint venture in 2008, the new operating entity, MillerCoors, understood the need and realized the opportunity to build an integrated and improved information governance program.

This case study details the RIM initiative undertaken by the new organization. Special focus is given to:

  • Identifying the scope of the RIM initiative and the goals for the program.
  • Developing and implementing a process to combine the retention schedules for both legacy organizations,
  • Establishing communication between legal, IT and the business functions and learning to think broader than traditional corporate processes to meet objectives
  • Building a data map to identify the sources of ESI in both the legacy and new IT infrastructures,
  • Implementing email management across the new IT infrastructure

In this session, a practical application of the theory of RIM will be demonstrated.

Participants also will learn about key issues and processes that need to be taken into account when implementing RIM in their organizations.
